Story Breakdown: SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Arcade)

One of the best parts of a video game is the ending, but who has the time to go back and play through every game? Let me introduce you to Game Over: The Early Years, the weekly show where we dive into classic games and spoil both their stories and endings. From the biggest hits to obscure classics, we're taking a look at some of the best and most memorable conclusions in video game history.

By 1993, Sega had brought Sonic the Hedgehog to every platform under their control. There were two Genesis games, Master System ports, a time-traveling adventure on Sega CD and even a pair of Game Gear releases. But for his next trick, the Blue Blur decided to conquer the arcade market with a curiously-titled SegaSonic the Hedgehog. Released only in Japan and never ported to a home console, this 1993 oddity was lauded by critics as a brave new step for the franchise and awarded a perfect 10 out of 10 from Electronic Gaming Monthly. It also introduced the world to both Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, two unforgettable sidekicks that were instantly forgotten. But I say, let's remember this cult classic. Turn back now if you don't want to know what happens next, because today we're going to spoil the story and ending for SegaSonic the Hedgehog, the arcade game. This is Game Over: The Early Years!
