Tron vs. Assault Rigs

The twenty year old movie may show its age now in this technically advanced world, but it's influence is shown many years later. Take Assault Rigs, for example. Released a half dozen years ago on the PlayStation, Psygnosis set out to make the best 3D tank game they could.

To make the best tank game, though, they had to take a page straight out Tron's script. In the early levels gamers will fight battles in a

strange VR world. There they will take control of differently colored tanks, including red, blue, and green (left), and take on an assortment of polygonal baddies.

So what's strange? For one thing, the tank looks amazingly similar to that in the 1982 movie Tron. Even the wireframe world associated with Tron is again duplicated in Assault Rigs. See for yourself, but take it from me, while Tron may not have been the success Disney wanted it to be, it did manage to become influential, and hey, that's better than a $50 million opening weekend. Alright, maybe not, but I grade on a curve.
