CNN vs. the Mario Series

Going into E3 2003 I didn't expect to find Chris Morris. I figured it would be a nice little bonus, but I was really there to cover the games and next generation systems. But even after the show had ended and life had moved on I was still a little disappointed that I never had a chance to teach Mr. Morris the difference between 2D and 3D.

After ten months I had all but given up hope that we'd ever meet. I was busy working on other projects, and I really hadn't seen Chris on CNN recently. But on March 10th 2004 I received a rather unexpected email from the man in question. Thanks to Al Gore, the power of the Internet, and most likely a search engine, Chris Morris was able to get in touch and let me know that he felt silly ... and it wasn't entirely his fault.

Hey there ... Just found your piece CNN vs. the Mario Series. Sorry we missed each other at E3 last year.

You're right. It was an idiotic mistake, but in my defense, when you're sitting in studio staring at a camera, you have no idea what video clips they're showing while you talk. (The feeds are positioned so you can't look at them without looking off camera - and you always have to assume the camera's airing you live.) The plan when I talked with producers was to show Mario 64, but they swapped out the footage. Welcome to the wild and wooly world of live TV. Thus, I looked like a doofus.

You can rest now. The lesson has been taught. :)

Best,
CM
The truth is, this is a perfectly understandable, and totally forgivable mistake. It's hard to blame somebody for the mix up when they can't even see the TV. But, you see, that's not the point of Defunct Games. We aren't here to provide both sides. We're here to tear you down so we can feel better about ourselves. But in this case, we were genuinely wrong, and I hope it doesn't take the enjoyment away from the original intention.

I appreciate Chris Morris visiting my site, and can only hope that he promotes the Passion of the Christ GameBoy Advance game on CNN ... my life would then be complete! There's a feeling of finality most of my stories don't have, so don't get used to it, I think this is going to be a rarity!
