Power-Up #22: Secret Boots (Symphony of the Night)

It's the time of the year when the days get shorter, retailers stay open longer, big games are released and there seems to be a holiday every other week. Defunct Games wants to ring in this festive season with a look at back at some of video gaming's most questionable power-ups. Join us from November 28 to December 25 for a month of floating orbs, life extenders and special cloaks.
Secret Boots
[ Game: Symphony of the Night | Year: 1997 | Console: PlayStation ]
While exploring Dracula's haunted castle, Alucard finds all kinds of interesting and useful items. At the same time, he unearths a few power-ups that serve no immediate purpose. Think the secret boots are useful? Then you should check out today's episode of the 29 Questionable Power-Ups of Christmas, where we tackle this Symphony of the Night mystery.

Secret Boots (Symphony of the Night)
Purpose: Found in the underground caverns of Castlevania, these secret boots make Alucard slightly taller. That's it. It doesn't make him run faster or jump farther; they just make him slightly taller. Of course, that's ignoring the quality of the leather and the craftsmanship involved in making the boot. Not every piece of clothing gives you special abilities.

Legacy: We're 22 episodes into this feature and I'm stuck talking about the legacy of secret boots. At some point my life has taken a wrong turn. It's not like anybody is going to read this write-up, especially since it was posted so late (due to computer problems). There is no legacy for the secret boots ... they're just boots!

In Real Life: Find a pair of secret boots in a castle that is thousands of years old? Then might I suggest taking them straight to the Antique Roadshow or eBay? They may not give you special powers, but selling the boots will give you enough money to buy whatever you want. And when it comes down to it, isn't that a special power we all wish we had?
