Over the last few weeks, we've been counting down the best and worst Master System games, according to the UK magazine Sega Power. From 1989 to 1995, they managed to review more than 200 games from Sega's 8-bitter, including the over-the-top violence of Mortal Kombat II, the emotional stakes of Phantasy Star, the fantasy world of Golden Axe and, of course, the in-your-face assault that is Road Rash. We're now seven episodes into this series, which means that we're going to continue from number 50, which takes us to the mid-80% range. This may be the penultimate installment for this 8-part series, but don't let that keep you from enjoying this seventh episode of Sega Power's Top 211 Master System Games of All Time!
#50: Mortal Kombat II
85%
“If you like this sort of game, then you'll love this. If you don't, then you won't.”
#49: The New Zealand Story
85%
“A must-buy for fans of the genre. Sadly, it's yet another platformer, so in an already crowded market, it might get swamped by inferior clones. Let's hope not.”
#48: Ecco the Dolphin
86%
“A game that's still impressive after all this time and a juicy conversion to boot.”
#47: James Bond 007: The Duel
86%
“A quality piece of new Master System software. Graphics animation ‘n gameplay are almost identical to the 16-bit version. See, guys, you CAN do it when you try.”
#46: Lemmings 2: The Tribes
86%
“If you spark in your pants over puzzlers, and are still sad enough to get excited over Master System games, this is probably your cup of glee. Glen Bennets of the suburb unite! You're going to be sipping out of your thermos flasks in darkened rooms for a long time until you crack this one.”
#45: Thunder Blade
86%
“A great conversion of a great coin-op. Manic blasting action that keeps you gripped for many a playing session. Not in the same league as R-Type, but close enough to warrant a gander and a ponder about. It was good enough to be used in the Sega Challenge, after all.”
#44: Galaxy Force
87%
“Galaxy Force pushes the Master System to its limits – and is one of the best zappers you can lay your hands on. Even after the game has been completed, you should still find yourself coming back for a taste of this heavy duty action. Galaxy Force is a real belter – go for it.”
#43: Golfmania
87%
“Golf has never been better (well, not on the Sega, anyway). Even if you can't wait for U.S. Gold's Leaderboard to appear, you shouldn't be too unchuffed with this.”
#42: Super Off-Road
87%
“At long last, the best overhead racing game makes it to the Master System. Fast, smooth action and gameplay so clean you could brush your teeth with it.”
#41: Xenon 2
87%
“Tricky alien movement patterns and tough baddies make Xenon 2 a real challenge. Some nice twists add a new dimension to the shoot ‘em up format, and the Master System copes admirably. Even so, it still lacks that addictive hook which could have made it into a real classic.”
#40: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
88%
“An excellent game to play and one that would have been well into the 90% bracket if it had been a tougher challenge. As it stands, it's a worthy addition to the Alex Kidd collection.”
#39: Battle OutRun
88%
“If you want high-speed thrills and spills, which make your nerves stand on end and your teeth sweat, then look no further. If you're a speed demon with a thirst for adrenalin, then this is the game you've been waiting for!”
#38: Golden Axe
88%
“A simple hack ‘em up in fancy clothes – but so well done that it can't fail to become an instant classic. Not terribly difficult to finish, but worth playing, and it's a lot cheaper than buying the coin-op!”
#37: Monopoly
88%
“Just what solo Monopoly players need – and if you're a greedy, property-stealing Scrooge, then this game is for you!”
#36: Penguin Land
88%
“Penguin Land is one of the classic egg-traordinary arcade puzzle games. It has a lot in common with a similar game called Solomon's Key. The puzzles are never that hard, and usually only need a few attempts to crack them. It's an all round good egg!”
#35: Bubble Bobble
89%
“Bubble Bobble offers excellent gameplay and could have earned a Power Factor Gold. It's a shame you can get through it so easily with the infinite credits and password systems. I'm sure many of you will be glad of these features, but I reckon the game would be tougher without them.”
#34: Lemmings
89%
“A gorgeously original puzzle game that'll last you longer than just about any other Master System game ever. Don't miss it – you'll regret it if you do.”
#33: Spellcaster
89%
“This amazing arcade adventure is more like an interactive story than a game. Once you start playing it'll take men in white coats to drag you away! Not to be missed.”
#32: F1
90%
“F1 manages to capture all the hair-raising speed, exhilaration and excitement of the F1 race track. It's the best car game on the Master System to date and a must buy.”
#31: Ghouls ‘N Ghosts
90%
“Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is one of those titles that can't go wrong – an excellent tried and trusted game design with enough nice touches to make it an immediate favorite with any games player. Get hacking – but don't forget to put on your clean underwear.”
#30: Master Chess
90%
“As a Grand Master myself, I think Chess Master is great! But seriously, folks, it's well thought out and it plays a mean game. What else could you possibly want from a chess game. Fab and groovy.”
#29: Phantasy Star
90%
“If you're into RPG adventures, this is the one to go for. Explore stunning 3D labyrinths and solve a quest big enough to last for months. Astounding and huge. Get it!”
#28: Power Strike
90%
“Terrific blasting action: Fast, addictive, exciting and challenging with a real streak of quality. Well worth saving up for!”
#27: Road Rash
90%
“An excellent 8-bit conversion of the beat ‘em up on bikes. There are no racing games to touch this on the Master System, and only F1 comes close.”
#26: Super Space Invaders
90%
“Super Space Invaders is a true classic that you'll never grow tired of playing. The difficulty tuning is good and it's nice to have the route choices too. Playing with a friend is by far the best way to play – even though you'll get through the game pretty quickly. Brilliant fun, Domark.”
