Sega Power's Top 211 Sega Master System Games of All Time (Part 5: #100 - #76)

Over the next few weeks, we're going to be counting down the best and worst Master System games, according to the UK magazine Sega Power. From 1989 to 1995, they managed to review more than 200 games from Sega's 8-bitter, including games based on board games, games based on arcade games, games based on sports games and even games based on old commercials. We're now five episodes into this series, which means that we're going to continue from 100, which takes us to the mid-70% range. You may be craving 7up right about now, but don't let that keep you from enjoying this fifth episode of Sega Power's Top 211 Master System Games of All Time!

#100: Cool Spot
75% “Perfectly playable and, although Spot himself is sadly diminished and nothing much actually happens, you should still have plenty of fun.”
#99: Ms. Pac-Man
75% “What's this classic oldie doing coming out in 1992? Surely modern games make it look hopeless? Not so! Ms. Pac-Man recaptures all of the sheer addictive simplicity of its arcade parent. There's no depth, just great and simple arcade fun. The simultaneous two-player mode is a real boon, too.”
#98: Vampire: Master of Darkness
76% “A competent platformer. Plays a lot like Ninja Gaiden (and the rest), but that's not a major crime. A fun game – although with only five levels, it's a bit short. Try it out.”
#97: Pro Wrestling
76% “Like so many two-player games, that's how they're designed to be played and you're only getting your money's worth if you've got someone to play against. Great fun if you have though.”
#96: World Class Leaderboard Golf
76% “It's good, but not THAT good. The Mega Drive golf games are really a lot better. Not just because of the better graphics, but because there are a lot more to them. With features such as shot selection, choice of clubs, league tables and irregular greens, they make World Class Leaderboard look dated. Not as good as Golfmania, but a refreshing change nonetheless.”
#95: Forgotten Worlds
77% “I liked this one. The control method still takes a little while to get used to but once you get to grips with it the fun comes thick and fast. Having two-players at once would have been great, but I guess you can't have everything. If you liked the coin-op or fancy a blast that's a bit of a change, then check this out.”
#94: The Addams Family
77% “A slightly better than average platformer that really should've been something else. Still, its puzzles are tough and it should last longer than most. Not a Munster hit, though.”
#93: Aerial Assault
78% “Gasp! A modern game? Yes! And with stunning parallax scrolling and the occasional change of viewpoint, Aerial Assault really manages to keep you on your toes.”
#92: Global Defense
78% “If you prefer a good slice of variety in your games, you'll soon start pushing out the Zs, and it probably won't take too long to finish, once you've got the hang of the controls. Innovative, unusual blasting action with a good dose of quality.”
#91: Sagaia
78% “Sagaia is a good shoot ‘em up with some neat surprises and nice options (you can choose which zone to tackle next, for example). Great blasting action!”
#90: Trivial Pursuit
78% “Trivial Pursuit is not everyone's idea of a fun game, but this Master System version is really superb. It's neater, quicker and a lot easier to play, too.”
#89: Wolfchild
78% “Definitely one of the better-looking platformers around. But hasn't the time come to play something a little less predictable and more involved than the simple ledge-leapers.”
#88: Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension
78% “Zool on the 8-bit looks good and plays quite well, but it's too easy and there's nothing more here that you won't find in any other platform game. Sounds a bit familiar, doesn't it?”
#87: American Pro Football
79% “Solid two-player footballing action, with enough scope of play to keep you entertained and enthralled. Not everybody's favorite sport, but it's more fun playing than just watching from the sidelines.”
#86: Shadow of the Beast
79% “Shadow of the Beast is technically a truly astounding game. It has some of the best graphics we've ever seen on the Master System. If only the game were a bit more involving, that's all – Tecmagik could have had another Power Gold on their hands. Not a classic release by any means.”
#85: Wanted
79% “A smart shoot ‘em up which puts the light gun to good use. Plenty of blasting action with an unusual twist – one of the best Phaser games so far.”
#84: Asterix and the Secret Mission
80% “A difficult and often frustrating mix of puzzling and platform gameplay that'll keep you at it for weeks. A touch too slow at times, but ultimately a rewarding playing experience.”
#83: Choplifter
80% “Choplifter sure is a feast for your peepers with no fewer than six layers of smooth parallax scrolling for that realistic 3D effect. It's a tough but challenging blaster, which should keep your reactions and trigger finger well exercised.”
#82: Masters of Combat
80% “Don't expect Street Fighter II, but Masters of Combat is a great beat ‘em up which shows that the Master System is still capable of throwing up some pleasant surprises.”
#81: Rambo III
80% “Hectic and tough, Rambo III provides plenty of action which will appeal to anyone who likes to shoot things that at least look like people.”
#80: Secret Command
80% “Screaming two-player combat action with some heavy firepower. With lots to do, plenty to kill and collect, Secret Command (or Commando) is a mean cart which you should check out pronto.”
#79: Shooting Gallery
80% “A great game that's well-presented and tough enough to provide a good challenge. There's plenty of variety in the gameplay and some jolly nice graphical touches, too.”
#78: Slap Shot
80% “One of the better team sports simulations, with loads of hotly-paced action and some joystick-busting gameplay.”
#77: Speedball
80% “Speedball gets a high Power Factor because it's a great game to play – only in two player mode, however. If you're only going to play it on your own, don't bother. If you and a mate fancy clubbing together and sharing the cart though, you'll have hours of entertaining and highly competitive fun.”
#76: OutRun Europa
88% “Out Run Europa is a big and very colorful game that has some glorious graphics. The action is non-stop all the way too! Okay, so maybe it's not the most complex game around, but it's still great fun to play. As a pure and simple drive ‘em up, this is the best yet.”
