Over the next few weeks, we're going to be counting down the best and worst Master System games, according to the UK magazine Sega Power. From 1989 to 1995, they managed to review more than 200 games from Sega' 8-bitter, including violent mercenaries, police-sanctioned car chases and a bunch of cutthroat pirates. And shiver me timbers, because we're also getting cavemen and 1920s gangsters. It's a whole smorgasbord of colorful characters. We're now four episodes into this series, which means that today we're going to continue from number 125, which takes us to the low 70% range. We may be racing towards the mid-way point, but don't let that keep you from enjoying this fourth episode of Sega Power's Top 211 Master System games of All Time!
#125: Captain Silver
70%
“Because the game is quite tricky, and there aren't any continue options, Captain Silver becomes infuriatingly addictive. If you don't mind too much how your games look and sound, then check this one out – you might be pleasantly surprised!”
#124: Chase HQ
70%
“Slightly disappointing conversion, lacking the ‘umph' of the original. Still very good – but not the ultimate. Still, if you were one of those people who pumped all their spare change into the arcade machine, you won't be that disappointed.”
#123: Chuck Rock
70%
“Lots of prehistoric laffs with a range of hard puzzles – although the game follows a set pattern. Nothing to rival Sonic, but the action's solid, fun and addictive.”
#122: Desert Speedtrap Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote
70%
“Got high blood pressure or a weak heart? Then avoid this at all times. Despite some really wonderful bits, this is one of the most frustrating Master System titles around.”
#121: Gain Ground
70%
“Nice idea which requires quite a bit of thought. This game will have you occupied for quite some time, although shoot ‘em up addicts may be bored quickly. Give it a try.”
#120: Klax
70%
“Klax is a straight-forward puzzler with heaps of levels. This isn't a game for the slow in hand or mind, but persevere and you'll be coming back time and time again. Make sure you practice in the early rounds though, cuz you'll need to know where you are in later levels to get through it all.”
#119: Trap Shooting & Safari Hunt: Combo Cartridge
70%
“The three games are nothing outstanding in themselves, but bundled together, they form a good, but not brilliant shooting cart.”
#118: MERCS
70%
“The action in Mercs is fast, furious and relentless – almost too relentless. In fact. Add to this the rather quirky control method and you have a game which may prove too difficult for some. The graphics are good though and there's fun to be had if you stick with it.”
#117: Space Gun
70%
“Not half bad ... okay, so the gameplay's a bit repetitive and the game itself isn't very taxing, but this is still a good example of a Light Phaser title. Great for young kids.”
#116: Summer Games
70%
“Experienced players will find it far too easy to get to grips with which destroys some of the challenge. A great ‘party' game though and if you run a Sega Club, then this is the sort of thing you should be spending your club evening playing.”
#115: Dead Angle
71%
“Dead Angle is a good-looking blaster and a terrific conversion. Definitely one for the trigger-happy Sega owner's library.”
#114: Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck
85%
“This is yet another Donald Duck-oriented platform caper. It's okay for what it is, and if you actually like the Duskish one, it's wonderful, though you've seen it all before.”
#113: Dynamite Duke
71%
“As with the Mega Drive version, the boys don't agree. Some shoot ‘em ups do require a fair amount of thinking, as well as quick reflexes, but Dynamite Duke really falls into the mindless-homicidal-maniac-but-all-in-a-good-cause category. Still, the conversion's been done well. Think before you buy.”
#112: The Smurfs
71%
“The Smurfs is a platform game. Not unlike Daffy, or Mickey or Donald or anything really. What's next? A Muffin the Mule beat ‘em up? A Humphrey the Cushion shoot ‘em up?”
#111: The Ninja
71%
“Tricky, Commando-style action game with plenty of heat. If you fancy a bit of oriental violence and like a challenge, try lashing out on The Ninja. Good stuff.”
#110: Alien 3
72%
“Earth-shattering it ain't, but Alien 3 is a solid game with lots going for it. It'll keep you up nights – but not through fear. It's just as addictive as hell.”
#109: Battlemaniacs
72%
“Credible as 8-bit platform-based games go, but showing signs of rapid aging.”
#108: Power Strike 2
72%
“Too fast for its own good, I'm afraid. The quick pace makes it difficult to tell your friends from your foes. Nice demo of the Master System's great potential speed though.”
#107: Submarine Attack
72%
“Great graphics, good game design and quite a tough challenge. Or rather, it would have been. If returning to a completed game is no problem for you, then give it a try – you won't be disappointed. Otherwise, I'd recommend you save your money for something with a bit more long-term appeal.”
#106: Wimbledon 2
72%
“Wimbledon 2's nothing stunning, but it's a decent all round game which'll give you plenty of fun. The rapid pace of the matches kinda makes up for the sluggishness of the animation.”
#105: Teddy Boy
73%
“Teddy Boy is a strange little game, but it's fun and quite challenging. So simple, even the cat could play it. And he'd enjoy it, too.”
#104: Daffy Duck in Hollywood
74%
“If you dribble at the thought of playing 8-bit platform game, then you'll be foaming up all over the shop to this one. I, on the other hand, have played Earthworm Jim.”
#103: Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2
74%
“This is a challenging and addictive vertically scrolling platformer, backing up by tidy and colorful graphics. The only downers are the infinite continues and lack of depth.”
#102: Strider
74%
“Strider looks excellent and plays well at first. Unfortunately, once you solve a level, it's a total walkover next time around, so there isn't really much to haul you back when you complete it. The difficulty tuning is uneven too. Strider is good while it lasts, but don't expect that to be forever.”
#101: Super Monaco Grand Prix
74%
“What are the most important things in a race game? The impression of speed and the way the car handles, that's what. Super Monaco Grand Prix falls short on these slightly which is a shame. The car handling lets it down but it's still a good racing game – especially in two-player mode.”
