Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog: 1990s Critics Pick the Winner

Episode #3 - Sonic vs. Mario. It’s one of the greatest rivalries in all of video game history. One put the Sega Genesis on the map, while the other made the name “Nintendo” synonymous with gaming. Even today, these two are still battling it out at the box office. To this very day, gamers continue to argue about which is best – Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s a battle that has been raging for 33 years, and will probably go another 33. But what did the critics say in 1991? Was it this back-and-forth, or was there a clear winner in this 16-bit showdown? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer & Video Games, Mean Machines, GamePro and more classic magazines that reviewed both of these side-scrolling platformers. Today we’re going to see where the critics landed and maybe even settle this debate once and for all. This is Magazine Match-Up!

The Nintendo Switch Online Games That Weren’t Reviewed

Episode #209 - In an attempt to cover every single game available on the Nintendo Switch Online, we’ve created a new page devoted exclusively to games that received zero English-language reviews. Sometimes it’s because the game came out before magazines were issuing reviews, while other times it’s because the game was a Japanese-exclusive until just recently. We’re going to recap and explain the situation for each of the review-less games in this brand-new episode. If you don’t see the game you’re looking for in the normal Review Crew episodes, then chances are good that it’s here.

Nintendo Switch Online: 1980s Critics Review Metroid, Mario Bros., Blaster Master & Wrecking Crew

Episode #206 - No, you aren’t imagining things, it really has been more than a month since Nintendo announced a classic game for their online service. While we wait for their next announcement, it’s time to once again take a look at the last few Nintendo Entertainment System games that still need to be given the Review Crew treatment. These include 8-bit gems like Metroid, Blaster Master, Wrecking Crew and the original Mario Bros. Sure, all of these games hit the Nintendo Switch Online service years ago, but I still need to ask: Are any of these games worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Nintendo Magazine System, Computer & Video Games and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. Nintendo Switch Online: 1990s Critics Review Panel de Pon, Smash Tennis & Mario's Picross

Episode #199 - Will Nintendo announce the much-anticipated Switch Online release of Golden Sun this week? Maybe, but I won’t know, because I’m currently on vacation at the beach. Instead of predicting what Nintendo will do, it’s time to finally wrap up the Super NES library with the final three games that have not gotten the Review Crew treatment. I’m specifically talking about Smash Tennis, Mario’s Super Picross and Panel de Pon, which you may also know as Tetris Attack. Sure, these games hit the subscription service years ago, but I still need to ask: Are any of these games worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Super Play, Computer & Video Games and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. 1990s Critics Review Super Mario RPG on Super NES

Episode #190 - 27-years after first hitting the Super NES, Super Mario RPG is back and ready to get a brand-new facelift on the Nintendo Switch. With the remake coming out on Friday, I was curious what critics thought of this unlikely mash-up back when it first came out in 1996. Was this the role-playing event of the year or a massive misstep from two industry giants? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Next Generation, Game Fan and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when Super Mario RPG was first released. It may not be part of an online subscription service, but this is a Super Mario-enhanced episode of Nintendo Switch Review Crew.

Nintendo Switch Online: 1990s Critics Review Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island & Mario All-Stars

Episode #189 - After two straight weeks of exciting releases, Nintendo decided to take this week off when it comes to porting classic games to their online service. That sucks, but don’t worry, we still have plenty of 8- and 16-bit games in desperate need of the Review Crew treatment. I’m talking about genuine classics like Super Mario Kart, Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Sure, these games came out years ago on the Nintendo Switch Online service, but I still need to ask: Are any of these games worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, Die Hard Game Fan and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. That’s right, this is another week with no new classic Nintendo Switch Online games. Thankfully, we still have a lot of 8- and 16-bit games to cover in the review crew, including the three games we’re to talk about today – Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. Thankfully, we still have a few dozen old school games to get to in this Review Crew series, so today we’re going to cover three classic games we previously missed. This week we’re looking at three Super NES launch-day classics, including F-Zero, Super Mario World and Pilotwings. Those are definitely well-known games, but are any of them worth playing? What do you do? Apparently, the answer is to dump a bunch of Super Mario Advance games on the service, all of which are ports of games previously available on the Switch. On May 26th, we’ll be getting three more Super Mario Advance games, including ports of Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island. Review: Rise of Fox Hero

Rise of Fox Hero has all the ingredients to be an adorable 3D platformer that is good for gamers of all ages. By mixing elements from The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros., this budget title had a lot of potential to create something unique and creative. Unfortunately, the developers squandered that potential by creating a painfully generic action game that lacks personality, deep gameplay, compelling boss battles and, worst of all, a story. I don’t want imply that very little thought went into making this 3D platformer, but the best name they could come up with was “Fox Hero.” That decision speaks volumes.

Right now, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can download five old school Game Boy titles, including Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Kirby’s Dream Land, Gargoyle’s Quest, Metroid II: Return of Samus and, of course, Tetris. But for as exhaustive as we've been, there are two issues that we have yet to talk about. The first is the 1989 Buyer's Guide, which launched February 1989, only three months before the second magazine we're going to talk about today, Electronic Gaming Monthly's very first issue.

Review: Serious Scramblers

Serious Scramblers offers a solid concept with a lot of action-packed potential. Unfortunately, the developer doesn't do enough to keep the simple premise engaging. You'll see the same platforms, the same obstacles, the same enemies and the same backgrounds so many times that everything will blur together after a while. I love the wide variety of unlockable characters, but they aren't given enough to do in the short campaign. After all the repetition, I'm seriously scrambling to find a deeper game.

The result is an endlessly creative mix of parodies and physics-based puzzles that will put your skills to the test. Review: Awesome Pea

While I wouldn't call it a monochromatic masterpiece, Awesome Pea is an enjoyable game at an attractive price. The thirty stages are mostly challenging, the gameplay is tight and there's enough variety in the level designs to keep things fresh, at least for a while. I also like the simple throwback graphics and the soundtrack. What I don't like it how repetitive the game gets and how all of the levels feel like they were sewn together at random. Much like the developer's first release, Game Soup is too shallow for its own good. On the other hand, I do love the look of most of the stages, especially when they parody classic games. I wish the game would have played more into these old school references. Game Soup is fast and often funny, but the repetitive stages and lack of originality left me hungry.

Review: Ink

Ink takes a genre we're all familiar with and gives it a fresh coat of paint by turning everything invisible. While that may sound frustrating, it actually makes for a charming new platformer at a reasonable price. I do wish the gameplay was a bit tighter and there was a little more variety in the obstacles, but fans of the genre won't be let down by the inventive stage designs. It's hard to see at first, but Ink is worth playing.

Review: Blur

Sold as a retelling of Super Mario Kart, Blur ends up being a solid game on its own merits. The fast-paced races, exciting power-ups and fun online mode aren't marred by a shallow single-player career and a low supply of race tracks. The game's fun online mode more than makes up for any minor issues I have with the game!

Review: ModNation Racers

ModNation Racers isn't the most original game on the PlayStation 3, but what it lacks in creativity it more than makes up in customization. Make your own levels, avatars and vehicles, then share them with the world. Who knew a simple concept could be done this well? If you've ever enjoyed a kart racing game, then Sony's newest racing game is well worth your time!

Can You Defend Super Mario Advance?

Episode #169 - Super Mario Advance sucks! There, I said it. While few people complained about the series at the time, ten years later it's hard to defend this Game Boy Advance franchise. Maybe you're the one that can talk me down. Could it be that Nintendo isn't lazy and actually had a method to their madness? Nah. But I'm curious to see if you can defend Super Mario Advance!

If you don't already own Braid, then either you hate fun or simply haven't discovered this charming (and beautiful) platformer/puzzler!

In all there are 14 different sports, none of which Mario exactly excelled at. Either way, for our 14th episode of our popular I've Got Your Number show we've decided to take a look at these 14 sports and tell the sorted story about all of the sports that Mario thinks he's good at!

Sure two of these games suck, but we'll always have Act Raiser ... and really, isn't that enough?

Nine Lives and the Video Game Industry

Episode #9 - I've Got Your Number (Ep. 9) - While some may complain about the way women and minorities are treated in popular video games, I'm here to tell you that there's another group that is being persecuted. I'm of course talking about cute and adorable little cats. Some people like dogs, I like cats, and as far as I can tell there has never been a triple-A game using our feline friends as a lean character. While we sit here and watch Nintendogs bask in the glow of success we have to wonder if there will ever be a time when cats get their dues. Let's hope that day happens soon, because I'm sick of playing as a smelly old dog. Isn't it about time cats had their day in the sun?

Video Games Just Say "Yes" to Drugs

Episode #86 - On Running Feuds (Ep. 86) - If the D.A.R.E. program taught us anything it's that drugs are not the answer.
