Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 29 X-Men Games

Episode #68 - As it turns out, EGM reviewed a total of 29 X-Men games between 1989 and 2009. That includes a bunch of beat ‘em ups, side-scrolling action games and, of course, a whole line of Capcom fighters. This list will include a number of prominent team-ups, including the likes of Spider-Man and Captain America, but we are only including the games that are either branded as X-Men or feature multiple characters from the iconic team. What we’re going to do today is count down the best and worst X-Men games using Electronic Gaming Monthly’s own words and scores. There’s no editorializing here. We’re just going to focus on what the critics said at the time. Oh, my stars and garters, you’re about to find out what happens when EGM Ranks the X-Men!

Nintendo Switch Online: 1990s Critics Review Street Fighter II Special & Kid Chameleon

Episode #160 - Admit it retro heads, this has been a surprisingly great year for the Nintendo Switch Online service. Ever since they uploaded the Game Boy line of consoles, Nintendo has been good about updating the classic game space every two or three weeks. This newest update brings four Genesis games to the Expansion Pack, including Kid Chameleon, Flicky, Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition and Pulseman. That’s exciting news, but the question remains: Are these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Video Games & Computer Entertainment, Die Hard Game Fan and more classic magazines to see what the critics said about these games when they first came out. Well, all of them except for Pulseman, which didn’t find its way outside of Japan until 2009. So, grab your favorite mask and practice those hadoukens, because this is another action-packed episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew.

Review: Breakers Collection

While not as well-known as Fatal Fury or The King of Fighters, this brand-new compilation from QuByte Interactive makes a strong case that Breakers and its 1998 sequel, Breakers Revenge, were Neo Geo fighting games worth remembering. Featuring both arcade releases, Breakers Collection improves on the original 1990s games by adding online multiplayer support, team-battle modes and all kinds of other extras. Not bad for a couple of games that have been criticized for being derivative and a bit on the shallow side. No matter if you’re a longtime fan of the series or just have nostalgia for 1990s fighting games, Breakers Collection delivers where it counts and is a compilation that is worth checking out.

Next Generation's 1 Star Reviews: The 25 Worst Video Games of 2001 (and Some of 2002)

Episode #7 - What do the games Evergrace, Stupid Invaders and The Bouncer all have in common? These three terrible games were all released in 2001, but they were NOT that year’s worst games. At least, not according to NEXT Generation magazine, who gave all three of these stinkers two stars out of five. As crazy as it sounds, NEXT Generation gave 25 different games a lower score than The Bouncer. I’m talking about the dreaded one-star, and today we’re going to go through all of these reviews and read the meanest, nastiest and snarkiest quotes from all 25 of these supposedly awful games. This is NEXT Generation’s One-Star Reviews, and these are the 25 worst games of 2001 (and a little of 2002).

Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 45 Street Fighter Games & Spin-Offs

Episode #20 - In case you’re wondering, EGM managed to review 45 games in the Street Fighter orbit between 1989 and 2009. That includes all of the Street Fighter II variations, a bunch of Street Fighter III ports and most of the oddity releases, like Pocket Fighter and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. For this list, I decided not to include games that simply had Street Fighter cameos, like Cannon Spike, or games like Final Fight or Rival Schools, which had characters turn up in the Street Fighter series. I have, however, opted to include the SNK vs. Capcom titles, as well as all of the spin-offs. What we’re going to do is countdown the best and worst Street Fighter games using Electronic Gaming Monthly’s own words and scores. There’s no editorializing here, we’re going to focus on what the critics said back when these games first came out. Join me for this fireball throwing episode of EGM Ranks Street Fighter.

GamePro Readers Choice Awards 1992

Episode #42 - This weekend brings us the 92nd Academy Awards, and while I'm not a huge fan of awards shows, I have to admit that I genuinely love the Oscars. Sure, they make a lot of boneheaded decisions and the hosts are sometimes disappointing, but I grew up watching them and still look forward to see what happens. One thing I've always wanted to do is vote at the Oscars, but seeing as I've never made a movie, worked in Hollywood or been nominated for any awards, it seems my chances are pretty slim. With that dream squashed, I figured I would do the next best thing -- vote for the GamePro Reader's Choice Awards.

Okay, so maybe that's not the next best thing, but it's exactly what I'm going to do today. I've pulled out this ballot from the November 1992 issue of GamePro magazine that wanted me to vote on the best games of the year. I didn't do it back in the day, but it's better late than never, right? Join me as I go through all eleven categories and pick the absolute best games of 1992.

Episode #41 - The year was 1993 and GamePro had an unexpected April Fools problem on their hands. Their nearest competitor, a scrappy and opinionated Electronic Gaming Monthly, had already come out swinging with convincing cheat codes -- one that unlocked Simon Belmont in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game and another that introduced Sheng Long to Street Fighter II. These immediately went viral and even got reprinted in foreign magazines, which was a big deal in the early 1990s. This forced GamePro to come up with their own April Fools series, and the result was LamePro.

You can call it a cheap rip-off all you want (Capcom did, leading to a lawsuit in the 1990s), but Jed Pressgrove argues that Fighter's History is one of the best Street Fighter II wannabes of the era. Find out why you should track down this Super NES fighter when Jed reviews Fighter's History.

Street Fighter II Special: What Did Critics Say in 1993?

Episode #33 - Review Crew #33 - A year after hitting the Super NES, Ryu, Ken and the rest of the World Warriors were ready to make the jump to the Sega Genesis. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition brought all the characters, moves and backgrounds to Sega's 16-bitter. Best of all, this version featured new characters that were unplayable in the original SNES release. But did critics like it? We turn to old issues of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Sega Force Mega, GamePro, Mega, and Game Fan to find the answer!

Rest in Pixels - This is How Ken Dies in Street Fighter 2010!

Episode #13 - Rest in Pixels #13 - Years before Guy and Cody made a surprise appearance in Street Fighter Alpha, there was another game that merged Final Fight with Capcom's mega-popular one-on-one fighter. That game is Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, a bizarre futuristic spin-off that did a terrible job predicting the 21st century. This action-packed 8-bit cart saw Ken as a cyborg cop, which allowed him to take on powerful aliens. Part human and machine, this is how Ken dies!

Street Fighter II: What Did Critics Say in 1992?

Episode #32 - Review Crew #32 - Arguably the biggest third-party exclusive of the 16-bit era, Street Fighter II did to the Super NES what Final Fantasy VII would later do for the PlayStation. Not only was it the biggest arcade game around, but it forced every other publisher to come up with their own fighting game. Could this Super NES game possibly live up to the hype? To find the answer to this question, we decided to look through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, N-Force, Super Play and other magazines of the era. What did the critics think of Street Fighter II on the Super NES? Find out in this new episode of Review Crew.

Rest in Pixels - This Is How You Die in Fighting Masters!

Episode #6 - Rest in Pixels #5 - Before Street Fighter II, there was Fighting Masters. Like most early one-on-one fighters, Fighting Masters is hard to play and incredibly shallow. But let me tell you, the character deaths are incredible. They are simultaneously hideous and a thing of beauty, creating a visual you'll never be able to forget. This is how characters die in Fighting Masters.

This Half-Year in Defunct Games: 2012 Report Card!

Episode #109 - 2012 hasn't been kind to everybody. For whatever reason, this year has been especially mean to the old school video game download services. I'm talking about the Virtual Consoles and PSone Classics. Sadly, most of these online storefronts have seen a drop in both releases and quality. Worrying this was a trend, we've decided to go by the numbers and see if the first half of the year spells doom for the second half. While not the most original fighting game of the 1990s, World Heroes does have a certain charm. The graphics are good, the controls are competent enough and there's an interesting cast of characters. But you've seen it all before, there's nothing here that is especially new or exciting. You can still have fun with World Heroes, but you're better off just playing a better fighting game. Check out John's full review of World Heroes for the Neo Geo!

This Week in Defunct Games - December 20, 2007

Episode #40 - Can you believe that there are only two more Thursdays left in 2007? That means that there are only two more episodes of This Week in Defunct Games left before we transition into a brand new year. If this year has been any indication then next year should be amazing. But who has time to think about 2008 when there are still games from 2007 to worry about? This week we shoot some intergalactic baddies in Alien Storm, crunch some mechs down to size in Cybernator, kill a few dragons in Monster Lair and destroy whatever it is you destroy in Tempest.

Down to Forward + Punch = Fireball

Episode #1 - 34 Cliches of Christmas (Day 1) - In our very first day of the 34 Cliches of Christmas Defunct Games looks at one of the worst offenders in the fighting genre. If you've played Street Fighter II then chances are you've thrown a fireball. And if you're thrown a fireball then there's a good chance that you did it by pushing down to forward and then the punch button. Sound familiar? It should, because you've done it in every single fighter you've ever played. Now we find out if this cliche is realistic, or if we should just ditch it at the curb. Find out now when you start our month-long trick down the 34 Cliches of Christmas!

While everybody knows and loves Street Fighter and Darkstalkers, there's one Capcom fighter you're probably not very familiar with. Unfortunately this game never received much fame in the United States, but that shouldn't keep you from checking out this import Saturn version. Find out why Cyberbots is so much fun when you read Josh's full review of this Sega Saturn import title.

Oh SNK vs. Capcom ... what the hell happened to you?? Of all the retro resurrections this year, it was SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS that we were the most excited about. Yet SNK decided to forsake us every step of the way. With its game-freezing bug, a new interface that doesn't feel right, and some drastic (and unneeded) changes to the overall gameplay, Card Fighters DS proves to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Episode #11 - They Said WHAT?!? (Ep. 11) - With major sequels like Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV dropping this year it's easy to forget when Street Fighter III was the most anticipated sequel. But that's exactly what was on everybody's mind ten years ago. However, before Capcom even announced Street Fighter III Die Hard Game Fan was spreading predictions and rumors about the hot sequel. Although Capcom can't count past three, that hasn't stopped the mighty company from using their Street Fighter characters in all sorts of weird ways.
