Review: Creature Defense (Reviews au Courant)

Creature Defense mixes up the tried and true tower defense formula by adding cards. For the most part it works, but if you're not already a fan of this style of game you will likely not be won over by this mash-up. The good news is that this is an easily accessible game full of depth and replay value. Worth checking out, even if this is your first tower defense game!

Review: Armored Core 3 Portable (Reviews au Courant)

There are a lot of PlayStation 2 games I wouldn't mind owning on the PSP ... and Armored Core 3 is not one of them. If you're not already a fan of the series you won't be won over by this clunky installment. With an enhanced sequel coming out later this year, there's no reason to fuss with this eight year old PS2 game!

This Week in Defunct Games - February 2, 2010

If it's Tuesday then it's This Week in Defunct Games! I would like to start this episode with a correction. Two week ago I stated that Shadow Dancer was the last 2D classic Shinobi game left for the Virtual Console. This is wrong. This week Sega reminds me about Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, the exciting 2D platformer for the Sega Master System!

Review: Blast Off (Reviews au Courant)

If Blast Off is the kind of game we can expect from the PSP Minis, then maybe we need to finally start paying attention to this marketplace. This is an addictive action/puzzle game that requires skill, patience and maybe even a little luck. It provides hours of fun for next to nothing and is easily the best PSP game I've played in months!

Professor Iwata and the Diabolical iPad

They Said WHAT?!? (Ep. 37) - It's fair to criticize the iPad for being nothing more than a larger iPod and not having much in the way of new functionality. Those are complaints I have with Apple's newest gadget. But when you're Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, maybe you should take a pass at voicing your opinion. Find out why Satoru Iwata is a hypocrite when you read Professor Iwata and the Diabolical iPad!

Review: Adventure Island II (NES)

So it turns out that Adventure Island II is almost exactly like the first game. In other news, grass is green, the sky is blue and Jay Leno is a douche bag. It turns out that this Adventure Island sequel continues to offer entertaining platforming action, even if the levels are repetitive and it rehashes a lot of elements from the first game. Find out what John thinks when you read his full review of Adventure Island II for the NES!

We're celebrating the last weekend of January in the most appropriate way we can think of - by reviewing a couple of action games! Up first we have Cyril's take on The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, an 8-bit maze game starring some of your favorite Looney Tunes characters. If that's not enough for you, I suggest checking out John's review of Adventure Island II for the NES!

Review: The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle (NES)

Bugs Bunny may not be the hippest video game character, but he does a good job of navigating the choppy waters of the maze game. There are enough enemies and challenges in Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle to keep you going for quite awhile, even if the control is a little off and the graphics are terrible. Find out what Cyril thinks when you read his full review of Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle for the NES!

The Cover Critic Collects Old EGM Issues

The Cover Critic (Ep. 73) - The Cover Critic welcomes the new year with a brand new batch of mean spirited jabs. This week he looks through his extensive collection of Electronic Gaming Monthly, picking out five early magazines at random. Is it love ... or something much, much worse? Find out now when he digs through Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and even Primal Rage. Oh, and watch out for a cameo from Mr. Bruce Willis! You heard me. That's the kind of thing that happens when The Cover Critic Collects Old EGM!

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers is full of fantastic ideas, unfortunately it's marred by repetitive gameplay, questionable gameplay decisions, terrible voice acting and unlikeable characters. If you can get over those problems you'll find a good looking game with a decent story!

Why Is GamePro Pun-ishing Us?

They Said WHAT?!? (Ep. 36) - Once upon a time GamePro would end all of their terrible reviews with an equally bad pun. It didn't matter who made the game or what system it was for, GamePro was always there with a pun. To help celebrate GamePro's awfulness, Defunct Games has collected fifty of the best (and worst) GamePro puns of the early 1990s. Warning: You may want to grab some Advil just in case!

Review: Guitar Hero: Van Halen (Reviews au Courant)

This is not the game Van Halen fans have been waiting for. Not only does Activision's newest Guitar Hero game forget that Sammy Haggar and Gary Cherone were part of the band, but they also refuse to include any actual context or story to the music. Instead we get a re-skinned version of Guitar Hero World Tour with songs from bands that have nothing to do with Van Halen. This is a huge step backwards for not only Guitar Hero, but the music genre in general!

If it's Tuesday then it's This Week in Defunct Games. This week we get the unexpected pseudo-sequel to Zombies Ate My Neighbors, one of my all time favorite Super NES action games. Ghoul Patrol may not be the revelation that Zombies was, but it still remains an entertaining arcade-style action game that is well worth eight dollars. The good news is that you already know what I'm going to say, the bad news is that you're still going to have to read today's episode of This Week in Defunct Games!

It's Me or the Bad Advertising

Commercial Break (Ep. 50) - At long last it's time for our 50th episode of the Commercial Break. In these theme-episode we take a look at four terrible advertisements, for games as diverse as Golgo 13 to Skate or Die 2 to Hellraiser. Just wait until you find out who published Hellraiser. Here's a hint, it wasn't Deathwatch Entertainment. Find out where we came down on all of these advertisements and more when you read another exciting episode of the Commercial Break!

This weekend Defunct Games is proud to offer up our first to retro reviews of the new year. Up first we have the devilishly clever North & South, the only NES game that has the balls to make fun of the Civil War. If that's not your thing, then maybe you should check Heavy Barrel, the NES port of the classic arcade action game. Believe it or not, both games are worth playing. But don't leave yet, because you really should check out all of this weekend's retro reviews only at Defunct Games!

Who knew that fighting the civil war would be this much fun? North & South for the NES proves that you can turn one of this country's darkest days into a feel-good two-player game for an 8-bit console. Don't believe me? Then maybe you need to read Cyril's full review of North & South for the NES!

At first glance Heavy Barrel looks exactly like Ikari Warriors and Commando. But give this Data East game a second look, because Heavy Barrel proves to be a top tier arcade port that is easily playable. Throw in some cool features (like a two-player mode) and you have one of the very best shooters on the NES. Find out what Cyril thinks when you read his full review of Heavy Barrel for the NES!

GamePro Has Serious Control Issues

On Running Feuds (Ep. 168) - Is there anybody out there that can defend the controls in Dragon's Lair? What about Time Gal and Space Ace? Who could possibly defend the controls of Road Avengers? It turns out that GamePro is the one voice out there defending these ancient full-motion video games. See if you are swayed by their argument when you tune into GamePro Has Serious Control Issues!
