Things I Learned From Bad Magazine Art

On Running Feuds (Ep. 170) - I have a confession to make: I'm in love with bad art. I'm not talking about paintings of dogs playing poker or the creepy David Duchovny nude art exhibits, but rather the abysmal artwork found within the confines of classic video game magazines. I discovered I can learn a lot by studying some of these masterpieces. Join me as I look at six of the most baffling drawings as scene in the pages of Video Games & Computer Entertainment.

The Young Turks Must Be Stopped!

They Said WHAT?!? (Ep. 38) - Each and every day I look forward to my helping of The Young Turks, the hugely popular online talk show. But lately the show has made me question my loyalties. As a fan I hate to say this, but somebody needs to stop The Young Turks! Their video game reviews are giving real gamers a bad name, and somebody needs to pay the price. This is the episode you've all been waiting for, the one on one battle where Defunct Games SAVAGES The Young Turks!

Review: Resident Evil 5: Desperate Escape (Reviews au Courant)

A year after releasing Resident Evil 5, Capcom is back with the exciting conclusion to the story. In this Jill-centric DLC we get plenty of zombies to shoot at, a tense countdown to worry about and a brand new sidekick that barely says a word. And even though it doesn't contain a single haunted mansion, Desperate Escape more than makes up for it with its all-out action. At $5 it's hard to turn down the first downloadable content that actually matches the quality of Resident Evil 5!

This Week in Defunct Games - March 9, 2010

If it's Tuesday it's This Week in Defunct Games, the show that blows the lid off of the best and worst in this week's retro releases. Apparently Nintendo is looking to ride the Final Fantasy XIII press, because this week they unloaded the Super NES version of Final Fantasy II. While I love this game to pieces, I can't get over the numbering system. Isn't there something Square can do? It's the 21st century! Find out why I'm this worked up when you read another exciting episode of This Week in Defunct Games!

Comic Book Mods (Ep. 9) - Johnny Turbo is back to fight the evil FEKA! This is Comic Book Mods, the show that takes real video game comic books and edits them in mostly offensive ways. In this episode FEKA has a new master plan. It's a plan so evil that Johnny Turbo is going to pull out a gun and start shooting at ... CHILDREN!!! Find out why when you read the first new Comic Book Mod since July!

Level 1 (Ep. 3) - Sit down, press start and get ready for Level 1. This week we're moving away from the character driven action games into our very first shoot-em-up. They say that in space no one can hear you scream, but my neighbors can hear me yelling at the TV screen every time I die in Gradius. Find out how this influential shooter began when you join us for Gradius: Level 1!

Can You Defend Super Mario Advance?

Super Mario Advance sucks! There, I said it. While few people complained about the series at the time, ten years later it's hard to defend this Game Boy Advance franchise. Maybe you're the one that can talk me down. Could it be that Nintendo isn't lazy and actually had a method to their madness? Nah. But I'm curious to see if you can defend Super Mario Advance!

If it's Tuesday it's This Week in Defunct Games. At least, it USUALLY is. Apparently last week Nintendo completely forgot to upload a Virtual Console game, so we all got a few days off. Thankfully we're back with SNK's classic fighter, Fatal Fury Special. Does this SNK fighting game kick enough butt to be worth your money? Find out now when you read yet another exciting episode of This Week in Defunct Games!

Review: Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares (Reviews au Courant)

Nobody can fault Capcom for putting the suspense back in the Resident Evil franchise; I only wish there were more genuine scares. As it is, Lost in Nightmares is a solid adventure with a compelling location to explore. It's marred by a short (and insanely easy) campaign and a boss fight that was literally pulled directly from Resident Evil 5. The price is right for this expansion ... it's the length that is all wrong.

Forget the 2010 Winter Olympics, because all eyes were on the Nintendo World Summit! This week game journalists had a chance to go hands-on with Metroid, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and more. But that isn't the big news. Apparently Nintendo let it slip about their brand new handheld game console, the fifth iteration of the Nintendo DS. Find out all the details when you read this exclusive preview!

Even with some questionable controls and outdated graphics, Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble feels like the River City Ransom sequel I've been waiting for. There's plenty of exciting action, tons of boss fights and a whole city to explore. If you can get over the game's shortcomings, you'll discover that Kenka Bancho is worth fighting for!

Review: Heavy Rain (Reviews au Courant)

Everybody can breathe a sigh of relief, because Heavy Rain was definitely worth the long wait. This is an intriguing murder mystery that will have you guessing all the way to the end. Best of all, the narrative is one of the strongest I've seen in years. Even with some inconsistent voice acting and the unorthodox controls, Heavy Rain is a must-own PlayStation 3 game!

Even though he is normally mean and in a bad mood, the Cover Critic can't help but get wrapped up in the excitement surrounding Heavy Rain. He watched us play the game all week and now he's in love. So in this very special episode of The Cover Critic he is giving back by looking at all of the Heavy Rain box art. He's also throwing in the Indigo Prophecy cover art for good measure. Find out which artwork wins out when you read about how The Cover Critic Gets Caught in Heavy Rain!

Sit down, push start and get ready for Level 1! This week we sit down with the first level of Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the Sega Genesis. This 16-bit classic was one of the best reviewed games of the year and EGM's pick for Game of the Year. But forget about all of the praise and awards, because in this episode we take a look at the game's stunning first level!

Review: Dracula: Undead Awakening (Reviews au Courant)

Dracula: Undead Awakening won't make you forget about Geometry Wars and Everyday Shooter, but this Chillingo action game does manage to get enough right to be easily recommended. Best of all, the five dollar price tag simply cannot be beat. Even its small group of levels and no multiplayer support, Dracula is a fun PSP that is well worth downloading!

If it's Tuesday it's This Week in Defunct Games! This week we return live with a very special double episode, giving us two very different game reviews. Up first we take a look at Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, the quirky little Hudson game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. If that's too slow-paced for you, then perhaps you will have better luck with Sonic & Knuckles, the disappointing Sonic 3 expansion pack!

Review: Vancouver 2010 (Reviews au Courant)

There's very little to love in Vancouver 2010, Sega's half-assed attempt to make a must-own game out of the 2010 Winter Olympics. This dud features confusing controls, lackluster events and only a couple of hours of gameplay. At least the game looks good. As they say: Don't go where the huskies go, don't eat the yellow snow and definitely don't buy Vancouver 2010 for the PS3!
