This is Riptale. It's a brand new action-packed roguelike from Finnish developer Super God. This sees a brave ninja who is forced to take on an army of undead monsters. It may not be the most original story, but boy does it have a killer look. I've been playing through the recently released press demo and think it's kind of amazing. I know you have a lot of questions about Riptale, so let's crib this.


Whoa! This looks awesome! Yeah it does! I mean, I'm tempted to leave it there and just let the gameplay run. But I can't do that, so let's actually talk about why it's so awesome. For one thing, it's stunning. Just look at it. The animation is so smooth; it's just so damn pretty. And it doesn't look like anything else on the market right now. It's like the best looking and playing Commodore 64 game you can imagine.

But look at me, all I'm doing is gushing over the visuals. I haven't even started talking about the gameplay. Riptale is a 2D action game where you play a ninja who zips around the level slashing his enemies into bloody pieces. If he can see a bad guy, he'll be able to kill it in a blink of an eye. Best of all, you are able to chain moves together and kill several characters in about a second. I mean it, the action is fast and immediately fun. It's also tough, not that I'm complaining.

And it's a roguelike? That's right; each playthrough is a little different, thanks in large part to the random levels and upgrades. Oh, did I mention you can buy new types of attacks? The whole game revolves around picking up coins and using them at the shops. The demo only has a few things to buy, but they can change the way you take on the evil ninjas in substantial ways. For example, there's a type of slash that will make you bounce around, massacring pretty much anything that gets in your way. There are also some hidden areas where you'll find shrines and stones that will do ... something. I'm actually not sure what they do, but I'm intrigued by the possibilities. I would like to believe that I'm only scratching the surface of the content in Riptale.

What else would you like to see? This demo may be short, but packed with content. But even then, there are still some things missing that will only show up in the final version. As of right now, there are bosses and more unique enemies planned. They will also be adding a bunch of different levels to take on, along with new challenge rooms. Beyond that, I wouldn't mind seeing things to unlock and carry over between plays, such as different swords and hero characters. Or maybe you can buy new ninja abilities, like a double jump or wall bounce. It would be nice to see some sort of leaderboard, that way you can compare your ninja skills with your friends. What you won't find are different graphic options. What you see is what you're going to get, only with more stuff added in the coming months.

Conclusion: It's rare for me to preview a demo, and even rarer for me to play through that demo a dozen times. But I was hooked on the gameplay and found Riptale to be a great stress reliever. There's so much potential here, and saying that I'm excited for the full game is an understatement. Unfortunately, there's no release date set in stone. Super God says they are aiming for a summer release with a price point of about $6. But keep in mind, that's currently tentative and can change between now and release. Considering how great it currently plays, I have to assume they're spending all this time cramming a bunch of new content into the package. If you ask me, that's sounds like a great plan. In the meantime, I strongly recommend you check out the greenlight page and help get this game onto Steam. You won't regret it.
