Recent Articles on Defunct Games http://www.defunctgames.com The latest articles from Defunct Games. Nintendo Switch Online: 1990s Critics Review Extreme-G & Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls on Nintendo 64 http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/218 The Nintendo Switch Online is on a roll lately. Not just because they finally have a steady stream of releases, but also because Expansion Pack subscribers will have access to Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls. And that’s not the only racing game hitting the online service this week, because Extreme-G is also speeding to the finish line. That’s cool news, but are either of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, Computer & Video Games and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. I hope you have that need for speed, because this is going to be a highly-competitive episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew. Wed, 24 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Lunar Lander: Beyond http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1750 Lunar Lander: Beyond is everything fans could possibly want ... and a whole lot more. Unshackled by the Recharged series, this update turns the simple concept found in the 1979 arcade game into a story-driven adventure where the fate of the entire galaxy could depend on how well you can park a spaceship. Featuring dozens of exciting missions and a cool cast of characters, this really expands on the original concept, turning it into something almost unrecognizable. I wish some of the original ideas were fleshed out more and the game could stand to have a few more mission types, but even people who normally shy away from the lander genre will be won over by its charm. This is one small step for Atari, but one giant leap for Lunar Lander. Mon, 22 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Felix the Cat http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1749 If all you’re looking for is a way to play Felix the Cat’s 8-bit games on modern consoles, then this bare-bones compilation is for you. Thankfully, what the collection lacks in extras, it makes up with charm. Both the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy games are a fine reminder of how good 2D platformers were in the 8-bit era. There’s a reason why so many people wanted these games preserved, and you don’t need to have nostalgia for them to enjoy this package. I just wish there was more care put into telling us about Felix the Cat, his history, these games and what the Japanese version is. No matter if you’re a longtime fan or somebody new to these classics, it’s worth digging through Felix the Cart’s bag of tricks. Fri, 19 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 7 Days Heroes http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1748 7 Days Heroes is a cautionary tale of what not to do when making a run ‘n gun shoot ‘em up. While initially fun, you’ll quickly grow frustrated with the platforming action once it introduces the extra characters that follow behind our hero. Terrible pathfinding is just the start to a rage-inducing game that makes one mistake after another. And all that is before you run into the single most obnoxious video game background I’ve ever seen. If you care for your eyes and sanity, then do everything in your power to avoid the terribly named 7 Days Heroes. Thu, 18 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Contra: Operation Galuga http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1747 If you’re looking for a fun and fast-paced reminder why you fell in love with the Contra series, this greatest-hits collection hits most of the right notes. By fleshing out the story and adding a bunch of new characters to the team, Operation Galuga is more than just another modern-day remake. WayForward has figured out what people loved about this series and you’ll have a huge smile on your face from beginning to end. Unfortunately, for being a modern action game, this newest installment doesn’t add much new to the formula and misses a lot of opportunities to give us a deeper and move original game. It’s also overpriced, especially when you factor in the short campaign and limited extras. As a longtime Contra fan, I want to say that the series is back on track, but I have a hunch that a lot of that will come down to what Konami does next. Wed, 17 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 PlayStation Plus: 1990s Critics Review Alone in the Dark, MediEvil & Star Wars: Rebel Assault II http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/217 The slow-drip of 32-bit games hitting the PlayStation 5 continues this week with the release of three more classic titles. Look for Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare to spook survival horror fans, MediEvil to make them laugh and Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire to send Star Wars junkies into a galaxy far, far away. That’s exciting news, but are any of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer & Video Games, Next Generation and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. It’s time to put on a brave face, because this is going to be a very scary episode of PlayStation Plus Review Crew! Mon, 15 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Nintendo Switch Online: 1990s Critics Review Super R-Type, Amazing Hebereke and Wrecking Crew ’98 http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/216 For those who thought Nintendo would slow down when it came to their online service, guess again. We’re back with yet another big update, and this is a good one. This week we’re getting Amazing Hebereke and Wrecking Crew ’98, two 16-bit classics that are coming to America for the first time ever. On top of that, shoot ‘em up fans will have something to celebrate, as Super R-Type is hitting the online library. That’s exciting news, but are any of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer & Video Games, Super Play and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. Get your Force Bit ready, because we’re blasting off with another exciting episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew! Fri, 12 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Katana's Path http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1746 While Katana’s Path may look like a typical throwback arena shoot ‘em up, Retro Head Game Studio has made enough changes to the formula to give us something new and exciting. By tweaking the way the sword moves around the arena, this samurai-themed action game adds a level of strategy I wasn’t expecting, and the additions of unlockable weapons, levels and gear will keep you going for at least an hour or two. Unfortunately, the repetition sets in quickly and there aren’t enough modes to sustain the fun after you’ve unlocked everything. There are a lot of cool ideas and it’s probably worth $5, but Katana’s Path ultimately doesn’t cut as deep as you want it to. Wed, 10 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog: 1990s Critics Pick the Winner http://www.defunctgames.com/matchup/3 Sonic vs. Mario. It’s one of the greatest rivalries in all of video game history. One put the Sega Genesis on the map, while the other made the name “Nintendo” synonymous with gaming. Even today, these two are still battling it out at the box office. To this very day, gamers continue to argue about which is best – Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s a battle that has been raging for 33 years, and will probably go another 33. But what did the critics say in 1991? Was it this back-and-forth, or was there a clear winner in this 16-bit showdown? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer & Video Games, Mean Machines, GamePro and more classic magazines that reviewed both of these side-scrolling platformers. Today we’re going to see where the critics landed and maybe even settle this debate once and for all. This is Magazine Match-Up! Mon, 08 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 PlayStation Plus: 1990s Critics Review Cool Boarders, Rally Cross & Jet Moto 2 http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/215 If you’ve been following our Review Crew series, then you already know that we’ve finally covered every single game on Nintendo Switch Online. Unfortunately, while doing that, I ended up falling behind when it came to the PlayStation Plus classic game library. With a handful of recent releases in need of the Review Crew treatment, this is going to be the first of several recap episodes where we get caught up on PlayStation games. I’m talking about classic racing games like Rally Cross, Cool Boarders and Jet Moto 2. Sure, these were added to PS Plus months ago, but I still need to ask: Are any of these games worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, Edge and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games came out. I hope you have the need for speed, because this is going to be another fast-paced episode of PlayStation Plus Review Crew. Fri, 05 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Saga of the Moon Priestess http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1745 There’s a fine line between being inspired by a classic game and straight-up remaking it. Saga of the Moon Priestess barely hides that it’s pretending to be The Legend of Zelda, which may be nostalgic at first, but ultimately leads us down a disappointing path from one predictable trope to the next. Featuring familiar dungeons, cliched locations and power-ups that you’ve seen a thousand times before, there’s nothing new or interesting here. Couple that with a story that is barely there and an adventure that feels rushed with only five dungeons, and what you’re left with is a cover song that plays all the right notes, but pales in comparison to the original. Wed, 03 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Maniac http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1744 Maniac takes everything great about Grand Theft Auto and mixes it with the fast-paced action found in Vampire Survivors to create one of the most outrageous games of the year. This game excels because of the incredibly varied and well-crafted open-world sandbox, giving you new locations to explore and all kinds of things to dodge. You’ll quickly transform into a superhero as you buy upgrades and replay the twenty-minute-long mission over and over again, leading to some of the most explosive action this side of a Michael Bay movie. Sure, it can get a little repetitive and it probably won’t tide you over until Grand Theft Auto VI, but Maniac is an instantly likable action game with tons of personality and a leveling-up loop that will keep you addicted for a long time to come. Maniac is easily worth five-dollars. Tue, 02 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Electronic Gaming Monthly Ranks Blasto http://www.defunctgames.com/egmranks/69 As it turns out, Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewed a total of one Blasto game between 1989 and 2009. That includes the 3D platformer, the PlayStation entry and even the one starring Phil Hartman. Unfortunately, it does not include the arcade game Blasto from 1978, the 1981 Blasto from Milton Bradley or even Blasto from the Mass Effect series, but I still think we have more than enough title to make a great list. What we’re going to do today is count down the best and worst Blasto game using Electronic Gaming Monthly’s own words and scores. There’s no editorializing here, we’re just going to focus on what the critics said back then this game first came out. So get ready to pour one out for Phil, because this is what happens when EGM Ranks Blasto. Mon, 01 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Death of a Wish http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1743 Hack and slash your way through the nightmarish world of Neo-Sanctum in Death of a Wish, the action-packed follow-up to Lucah: Born of a Dream. Using harsh and almost violent scratches to draw the details, this is an emotional journey that has a lot to say about religion, trauma and what it takes to heal. It’s also an intense action game that may look like a chaotic mess at times, but makes perfect sense and is extremely easy to get into. Harsh and unflinching, Death of a Wish is not only one of the year’s best games, but also an experience that will stick with you for a long time to come. Thu, 28 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Nintendo Switch Online: 2000s Critics Review F-Zero: Maximum Velocity on Game Boy Advance http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/214 Admit it, you thought we were done with the Nintendo Switch Online for March. But here we are, with just a few days left to go, and Nintendo surprises everybody with the long-overdue announcement that F-Zero: Maximum Velocity would be hitting the system this Friday. That’s really exciting news, but the question remains: Is this handheld racing game actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, Next Generation and more classic magazines to see what critics thought when this game first came out. I hope you have a need for speed, because we’re hitting maximum velocity in this quickie episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew. Wed, 27 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 List of PlayStation Plus Classic Games http://www.defunctgames.com/psplus/1 Tue, 26 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 29 X-Men Games http://www.defunctgames.com/egmranks/68 As it turns out, EGM reviewed a total of 29 X-Men games between 1989 and 2009. That includes a bunch of beat ‘em ups, side-scrolling action games and, of course, a whole line of Capcom fighters. This list will include a number of prominent team-ups, including the likes of Spider-Man and Captain America, but we are only including the games that are either branded as X-Men or feature multiple characters from the iconic team. What we’re going to do today is count down the best and worst X-Men games using Electronic Gaming Monthly’s own words and scores. There’s no editorializing here. We’re just going to focus on what the critics said at the time. Oh, my stars and garters, you’re about to find out what happens when EGM Ranks the X-Men! Mon, 25 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Nintendo Switch Online: 1980s Critics Review River City Ransom, Wario's Woods, Kung-Fu Heroes & More http://www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/213 Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve done it. After nearly one-hundred episodes, we’ve officially covered every single game currently available on the Nintendo Switch Online service. That’s right, there are only six games left in need of getting the Review Crew treatment, and today we’re going to cover them all. I’m talking about old-school treasures like Baseball, Tennis, Wario’s Woods, Kung Fu Heroes NES Open Tournament Golf and River City Ransom. Sure, these games hit the online service years ago, but I still need to ask: Are any of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Computer & Video Games, GamePro, N-Force and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. So grab yourself a bottle of champagne and get ready to celebrate this very special episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew. Fri, 22 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story http://www.defunctgames.com/courant/1742 Although it’s missing a few key games, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is yet another fantastic video game compilation from Digital Eclipse. It tells the story of a video game rebel who used his quirky personality and eye for addictive games to stay relevant for more than fourty years. This interactive documentary and museum exhibit takes you inside some of his earliest games and shows you the highs and lows of the early days of the games industry. With more than fourty games and tons of extras, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is yet another great entry in Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master Series. Wed, 13 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800 Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 10 Dragon Quest & Dragon Warrior Games http://www.defunctgames.com/egmranks/67 As it turns out, EGM reviewed a total of ten games in the Dragon Quest series. About half of these reviews came when the series was still going by Dragon Warrior in the West, and the rest is Dragon Quest and its various spin-offs. Unfortunately, as is often the case with a franchise that has been around this long, there are a bunch of titles Electronic Gaming Monthly failed to review, but they hit a lot of the classics and I think we have enough here for a fun (and surprisingly competitive) top ten list. What we’re going to do today is countdown the best and worst Dragon Quest games using Electronic Gaming Monthly’s own words and scores. There's no editorializing here, we're just going to focus on what the critics said back when these games first came out. Get ready to stumble into a bunch of random battles, because that’s what happens when EGM ranks Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior. Tue, 12 Mar 2024 00:00:00 -0800
