Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (Virtual Console) Reviewed by Cyril Lachel on . It's no secret that Kid Icarus isn't a very good game. These days it's heralded as a Nintendo classic, but the actual game is frustrating and no fun to play. The good news is that the Game Boy sequel, Of Myths and Monsters, is a marked improvement over the original. Too bad that doesn't make it worth recommending. This isn't a terrible game, but there are better choices on the 3DS Virtual Console. Rating: 64%

What Is It? It's no secret that Kid Icarus isn't a very good game. These days it's heralded as a Nintendo classic, but the actual game is frustrating and no fun to play. The good news is that the Game Boy sequel, Of Myths and Monsters, is a marked improvement over the original. Too bad that doesn't make it worth recommending.

Much like before, you play Pit on a quest to climb up a giant tower full of poorly placed enemies. You shoot arrows and jump from one floating platform to the next, collecting heart pieces and trying to locate the exit. Occasionally the game will throw an endurance challenge at you, and Pit will suffer through poorly designed dungeon stages. Even with black and white graphics, Of Myths and Monsters is the best Kid Icarus has to offer.

Does It Still Hold Up? Much like the NES original, Kid Icarus 2 is loaded with questionable gameplay decisions. Pit is too floaty, making a lot of the platforming a pain. Worse yet, the backgrounds are dull and remind me of being in prison. The obnoxious music certainly isn't helping anything. On the other hand, the game is short and easy to beat.

Is It Worth The Money? If there's a good game in Kid Icarus, I certainly haven't found it yet. This is a series full of ideas, yet none of those ideas seem to be executed properly. The gameplay is a mess, the graphics are boring and the dungeons are poorly laid out. Even with all of these problems, Of Myths and Monsters is a significant improvement over the original NES game. This isn't a terrible game, but there are better choices on the 3DS Virtual Console.
