True Lies Will Be the Sequel to Total Recall (Retro Rumor #26)

Welcome to 30 Ridiculous Retro Rumors, a brand new series that will run daily between November 26 and December 25, 2015. This is a series where we debunk some of the craziest rumors and predictions of all time. Today we're talking about True Lies. You know it as a fun parody of James Band-style spy movies, but Die Hard Game Fan had a different idea. You won't want to miss today's episode of 30 Ridiculous Retro Rumors.

This is a real rumor taken directly from the August 1993 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly ...

This is just your everyday, run-of-the-mill rumor where Die Hard Game Fan predicts a full Street Fighter II collection on 3DO. While certainly wrong, there's nothing particularly ridiculous about the idea of a Street Fighter collection, especially this many years after the original. After 26 days, I'm starting to think that maybe we're being a little too tough on these magazines. Wait ... did he say True Lies is the sequel to Total Recall?

This probably goes without saying, but True Lies is not the sequel to Total Recall. True Lies is a James Bond send-up where Arnold Schwarzenegger's family life gets in the way of being the world's greatest spy. It's a light-hearted comedy from James Cameron. Total Recall, on the other hand, is an action-packed science fiction adventure where Arnold ends up on Mars. Trying to imagine the scenario where these two worlds connect is enough to make your head explode.

But what's truly baffling about this prediction is that Die Hard Game Fan doesn't even make the effort to connect these different movies. It's written as if the connection is obvious, but the two names don't even sound similar. At most, the two movies both start with the letter "T" and are assembled using two words. But if that's the connection, then we might as well count add Taxi Driver, Top Secret, Tin Men and True Romance to the list of movies set in Total Recall's universe.

The sad reality is that Die Hard Game Fan didn't get their wish. Arnold didn't wake up one day decide to only make blockbuster sequels; he doubled down with even more family-friendly fare. The success of Junior and Twins led to Jingle All the Way and Batman & Robin (or, as I like to call them, the true sequels to Total Recall).
